Microneedling at home: devices compared and a six-step guide

Does it hurt? I have heard this question more often than any other for 25 years, and my answer surprises almost everyone: hardly at all. With needles just 0.5 millimetres short, microneedling at home brings active ingredients to where a cream cannot reach, with no injection and no salon appointment. Here you can read which device is suitable, how to succeed with the treatment in six steps and when you are better off doing without it.

How skin changes from 50 and what many people wish for

Over the years the skin works more slowly. It holds less moisture, becomes thinner and loses firmness. Fine lines turn into wrinkles, pores look larger and the complexion loses its freshness.

In my consultations I hear almost the same wishes every time: skin that looks plumper and smoother, and a result you can actually see. At the same time it should not involve an injection, nor a treatment after which you would rather not be seen for days. Creams alone reach their limit here, because they mostly stay on the surface.

Microneedling opens fine microchannels in the top layer of the skin for a moment. Through them, active ingredients are absorbed better, and the gentle stimulus encourages the skin to renew itself and form its own collagen. What matters, however, is what you use to do it.

Stamp, derma roller or dermapen: what is the difference?

Three types of device are sold for microneedling at home. With a derma roller, the needles enter and leave the skin at an angle, which makes the channels more irregular. In addition, the serum is applied beforehand. By the time the roller reaches each area, it has often dried or run, and the amount needed does not arrive there at all.

The dermapen is an electric device with an adjustable needle length, which makes it demanding in inexperienced hands. With the micro-infusion stamp, also called a stamper, the needle length is fixed.

Microneedling with the Lifting Power Set: needle and serum in one step

The Lifting Power Set works with a micro-infusion stamp with 24 gold-plated needles. You fill the stamp with the serum, which soaks the needles and enters the fine channels as you place it on the skin. It is exactly this combination that convinced me: needle and active ingredient work at the same moment.

Cap off, needle head exposed: this is what the stamp looks like.

    Does microneedling at home hurt?

Anyone who hears the word needle thinks of an injection. At 0.5 millimetres, however, the needles only work in the top layer of the skin, and most users describe the sensation as a slight tingle. You feel it least on the forehead and cheeks, and a little more on the temples, jawline and upper lip.

In the days before a period, many people's skin is more sensitive. If you have the choice, schedule the treatment for the week after.

    How to use

    The treatment in six steps

A treatment takes about 20 minutes, 15 of them with the mask. The first time, it is better to allow a little more time.

    1. Prepare the skin thoroughly

Cleanse your face, neck and décolleté thoroughly with the Cleansing Foam and pat the skin dry. After that, nothing else goes on the skin.

    2. Fill the stamp with the serum

Pour the serum from the sterile container into the stamp.

    3. Turn it upside down for two to three minutes

Stand the filled stamp upside down for two to three minutes so that the serum soaks the needles completely. Only then remove the protective cap.

Once the protective cap is off, do not touch the needles with your fingers, as they can bend, become blunt or be contaminated.
    4. Stamp the face, neck and décolleté

Place the stamp vertically, hold it briefly, lift it off again and work area by area from the centre of the face outwards, down to the neck and décolleté. Leave out the eyelids and lips.

If in doubt, leave the area out. Skipping an area costs nothing.
    5. Massage in the remaining serum

Spread the remaining serum over the treated areas and massage it in gently.

In this step use only the serum from the set and no additional product from your routine.
    6. Follow up with the collagen sheet mask

After stamping, the skin is open and sensitive. That is why you now apply the collagen sheet mask from the set for 15 minutes. Only then is the treatment complete.

No make-up in the hours straight afterwards, no exercise, no sauna and no swimming pool.

The instructions in the pack always take precedence. If they differ from this overview, follow the pack.

The purity of the serum: three ingredients are enough

What enters the skin also determines the result. Many serums contain 20 to 30 ingredients, most of which only provide texture, scent or shelf life. Especially when the skin is open, less is more.

    • Hyaluronic acid binds many times its own weight in moisture and makes the skin look plumper.
    • Pentylene glycol provides moisture and keeps the formula stable without additional preservatives.
    • Sterilised water forms the pure base.

The serum contains no fragrances, colourants, silicones or mineral oils.

    When do you see results?

Straight after the treatment the skin feels noticeably moisturised, and many notice a fresher complexion the very next morning. The real change develops over several treatments in the 14-day rhythm.

Every 14 days, not more often

More treatments do not bring faster results, because the skin needs time for itself after every treatment. Two fixed evenings a month are just right.

Four mistakes we see again and again

    1. Vitamin C or fruit acids straight afterwards. Active ingredients such as vitamin C, AHA, BHA and retinol take a break for three to five days. Treat your skin to moisture instead, for example with a hyaluronic serum.
    2. Keeping the stamp. There is no second time, not even after wiping it with alcohol.
    3. Going out the next morning without sun protection. Freshly treated skin needs protection, for example with the Sunscreen SPF 30.
    4. Using it right before an occasion. Allow at least two days before a wedding, photo shoot or job interview.

My advice after 25 years: start on a quiet evening, take your time and only judge after the third treatment.

    Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about microneedling at home

    What is micro-infusion?

Micro-infusion is microneedling with a stamp, in which the serum passes through the needles directly into the fine channels. With a derma roller, by contrast, the serum is applied beforehand and can dry before it is rolled in.

Derma roller or dermapen: which is suitable for home use?

The dermapen is an electric device with an adjustable needle length and requires practice. For home use, a stamp with a fixed needle length of 0.5 millimetres is easier to handle.

    Is microneedling at home worthwhile?

With short needles, a new stamp for every treatment and a fixed rhythm of every 14 days, it is a gentle addition to your daily skincare. What matters is clean application and a little patience over several weeks.

What does microneedling do for mature skin over 50?

The gentle stimulus encourages the skin to renew itself, and the serum reaches the upper layers of the skin better. Many first notice more freshness and moisture, and a smoother complexion follows with several treatments.

Which serum is suitable for microneedling at home?

Ideally the serum from the set, which is matched to the stamp and contains just three ingredients. Fragrances, colourants and additional active ingredients do not belong on freshly treated skin.

Can I use the stamp more than once?

No. Every stamp is sterile-packed and intended for a single treatment. A needle field cannot be reliably sterilised at home, and the tips become blunter with every use.

What should I not apply afterwards?

No active ingredients for three to five days: no vitamin C, no retinol, no AHA or BHA acids, no exfoliants and no fragrances. Moisture, on the other hand, is explicitly welcome. During the day, sun protection is a must.

Microneedling at home or at a beauty clinic: what is the difference?

Clinics work with longer needle lengths and different devices, and the treatment is carried out by trained hands. Home use with 0.5 mm is deliberately the gentler option and not a substitute for professional treatment.

Can I use it during pregnancy?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding we recommend not using it.
